Some new mums may have put on a lot of weight during their pregnancy and find it very difficult to lose weight after giving birth. Knowing that they don’t look good, many will try to skip meals thinking that this will help them to lose weight.

However, doing this will only make their bodies go into starvation mode.  This means the body will store more fat.

Skipping meals leads to feeling hungry. Some women may end up bingeing to compensate for the meals they skipped. This results in weight gain instead of losing weight.

You can’t manage your weight by skipping meals. You need a healthy diet of vegetables, fresh fruit, whole grains, lean meat and fish.

You also need regular exercise and a strong commitment to lose weight.

During childbirth your pelvic floor muscles are stretched and after you have a couple of children, they may have relaxed to the point that urinary leaks are common.

How do you do Kegels?  My gynaecologist taught me that to do kegels I have to contract and lift my pelvic floor muscles.  It involves contracting your vaginal muscles as if  you are holding back your urine and pushing them up into your abdomen. You need to hold this contraction for ten seconds at least.  Do about 5 repetitions each time working up to more as you get the hang of it. This can be done anywhere at any time.

Kegels exercise strengthens your pelvic floor muscles so that urine will not leak out when you sneeze or laugh.

Delivering a baby is hard work! Labor can last many hours especially if it is a first baby. This leaves a new mother exhausted.  On top of that, if she chooses to nurse her baby, it will be even more taxing on her, especially if she does not have anyone to help her with the baby and other house chores.

The confinement period is the time for her to rest and for her body to recover. However with baby’s demands, the time to rest and relax is curtailed. If she has to resume working, she will also feel more stressed with the added pressure of needing to lose weight.

One method of de-stressing is post-natal massage. Those of you who have had massages before will know the therapeutic benefits.

Post-natal massage will relax her tense muscles and provide relief for her stress. Her body aches can be massaged away and relieved.  Fluid retention is reduced and her uterus returns to its original size. It can also reduce cellulite and helps tone her body.

However, mothers who delivered their babies through C-section will need to confirm with their doctor first before opting for a post-natal massage.

Avoid sugary food and drinks such as biscuits, cakes, chocolate bars, processed food and carbonated drinks. This will help you to lose weight quickly.

Daily exercise such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming will burn body fat.  Half an hour a day will keep you fit and trim.

New mothers should strengthen their weak abdominal muscles by doing abdominal curls. This will tone and flatten the abdomen and the movements should be done slowly for better results.

When you breastfeed, you need to consume an extra 500 calories a day as well as drink more water.

You can take up between 2000 and 2500 calories a day . However, you need to watch what you eat and not munch on junk food and candies. These are just empty calories and have no nutritional value.

Opt for six small meals a day. Eat a healthy breakfast to jump start your day. Have a mid-morning snack. Enjoy your lunch and have a mid-afternoon snack. Then have a light dinner. Avoid garlic and onions as you milk may have that taste which may not be to your baby’s liking. Keep your coffee intake to a minimum too as caffeine is not good for your baby.
